À 16 ans, Léo ne rêve que d’une chose : devenir instituteur ! Or, sa rencontre avec Emma, une jeune opératrice, va bousculer son projet. Dans la Beauce des années 40', la rivière Chaudière sépare la ville en deux et rend leur amour impossible. Mais pas dans la tête de Léo. Admis au pensionnat de Québec, il lui promet de lui écrire souvent. Saura-t-il tenir sa promesse, trouver des alliés en ces murs et faire mentir le proverbe : « Loin des yeux, loin du cœur » ? Une chose est sûre : Léo n’a pas dit son dernier mot…
